Design Trend: Report from the Road – Dallas Market Center

25 days, 4 buyers, 3 cities, and 1 amazing Janaury 2014 market season. You may remember my post about Americasmart January 2014 Design Trends. Now, listen up about Dallas Market Center’s January 2014 Total Home & Gift Show.  I realize not all of you are as fanatical about Christmas as we are, so I will focus this post on home decor & furniture trends. All that glitters and sparkles will have to wait!

For the most part, the same wholesalers and importers show at all the major markets, but each market has it’s own personality with different vendors. We love going to Dallas. Firstly, it is closer to home. Secondly, the facilities, food, and service are great – not so crowded. Thirdly, there is a great mix of product, from high design to Christmas vendors to great gift companies – you can find it all in Dallas.  And, last but not least, you get to wear cowboy boots – it’s Texas, y’all!

Some of the trends I saw at Dallas stole my heart. I am IN LOVE with what I am calling the Angle Trend of 2014. (Those of you who know me won’t be surprised that I have coined an official hashtag #angletrend2014. Use it. Get inspired.)

How easy & fun would it be to glue aluminum foil to plywood to make these neat displays and sculptures! Talk about an easy art installation.

I fell in love with this Dallas Artist and Designer, Lauren Renfrow and her line Times Two Design. She incorporates geodes, deer horn, barnacles and glass with acrylic & lacquered boxes, trays, napkin rings and other home decor pieces. All sourced and made in the USA. Geodes are from Hot Springs, Arkansas – Love! Arkansas pride!

You know we are big fans of using nature’s art in home decor. Have you ever seen the film I Heart Huckabees? “You rock, rock.” I am seriously thinking about wondering the woods and collecting deer sheds to spray paint gold. In all of my free time, ya know.

We love picking and the flea market chic style. Over the last three years with the growing popularity of picker shows like American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Market Warriors, Junk Gypsies and the like, we see reproductions and one-of-a-kinds all over the market place. I touched on my philosophy behind this fad in my last Design Trend Report. If you could find an original bulb advertising sign, it would be a lucky get and you would probably pay a pretty penny not only for the sign, but to ensure it was wired properly. Now, you can get the reproductions pretty easily. Lights, camera, style action!

I love all of the different textures and styles used together to create this fresh, light, and airy look. Eye candy!

I couldn’t resist this look. I love the bold, gold metal drum hanging lamps paired with the simple, linen, slip covered sofa & chairs. The painting is perfect. Very serene. Can’t you just imagine this in a morning-light filled living room?

We love scouting out new designers, importers and factories to source our line. We are constantly blown away by the creativity we see in different showrooms and watching trends evolve. Market is a lot of work, but we have fun, too!

This Dallas Market was extra special since our very own Lucia Deen  won 1st place prize in the National Christmas Tree Design Competition put on by the HDA.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

As I write this post, I sit in a hotel room on the Las Vegas strip over looking all glittering lights that fascinate and delight.  We are here for Las Vegas Market, so stay tuned for my report covering Vegas. The adage, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” does not apply to our trip. I cannot wait to share with your what we are seeing here in Vegas. Stay tuned!

I started my small craft business at the beginning of Oct. 2013. Just to go and sale at vendor events. I call it Cork It Design. It has taken on a life of its own quickly and I am now selling out of a local store. Was wondering if you could take a look and tell me your thoughts and give me some feed back? It’s home decor with a touch of rustic charm. I am in the works of building my website, so currently you can find me on Facebook through Lara Spencer Bryant then like Cork It Design. I dream of the day I can afford to go to market. So great flu for you blog post. Thanks so much.
