Simple Holiday Survival Tips

Words like “peace”, “joy”, and “noel” surround the Christmas season and are motifs in Christmas carols and decorative themes.  No one usually associates the words “panic”, “frantic”, or “busy” with the season of good tidings, even though buying the gifts, preparing the house, planning the meal, and finding babysitters usually puts people in a bit of a frenzy.  Holiday entertaining and decorating tips & trends this season can make it easy on your wallet and your sanity.

Don’t have time to light up the house like the Griswolds?  Don’t fret!  Adding subtle hints of lighting to your front patio will still create a Christmas feel without the weekend commitment of installing lights.  Lantern vignettes and clustered pendant lighting are the perfect way to get the Christmas glow and can be used all year round.

When your lanterns aren’t being used for lighting, use them for display cases, indoor greenhouses for your small plants, or use them to store your bathroom accessories, like perfumes.  We love these DIY faux terrariums by Pewter and Sage.

When the Christmas season has come and gone, disperse your pendant lights in various rooms to change things up a bit.   Another idea would be to use pre-lit topiaries. Just plug ‘em in and voila! Your house has instant holiday cheer.

Using mercury glass is an easy way to get the holiday spirit and also invest in items that can be used year round. Mercury glass adds just enough sparkle for Christmas and New Year’s when paired with natural elements, like pine greenery.

You can use mercury glass vases or bowls with fruit, acorns, and pecans.  Use “home-grown” nostalgia to tie in new elements and make the look your own. Here in the Delta, we all have tons of pecans in our yards. Pecans make great centerpiece & vase fillers.

When the Holiday season ends, mercury glass can be tied into a number of different looks like a rustic or vintage home, homes with a French flair, or even a pop of shine in traditional homes.

Now that the stage is set on the inside and out, you are ready to accept your family and friends into your home and make new holiday memories. A lot of times, holiday memories are made around a meal, by hand and out of time honored, family recipes. Unless you have a small army of Christmas elves to help, you should always try to make things as simple as possible. Porcelain bakeware imported from Portugal can go straight from the freezer to the oven up to 500 degrees to your table, so you can prepare in advance.

A PMC Girl’s Guide to the Hunting Camp

As hunting season approaches we all know we will make at least one obligatory trip out to “the camp” with our special someone. For some of us the camp is our home away from home. We cherish the time we get to spend here. We crave the woods, sounds of tiny critters, and live for the hunt. For others it’s the place you go on the weekend if you want to see your man. We have selected a few creature comforts that will class up your stint as the weekend wilderness woman and make the camp feel a little more like home!

Brighten Up

Today we pay tribute to two of the hardest working accessories at home – lighting and mirrors. These items don’t often get a lot of credit, but are powerful enough to tie a room together. Timeless rather than trendy, these are fixtures that create a bright statement.

Light from the lamps create warmth while the mirror captures reflections from across the room.

Besides being utilitarian, lighting helps define a room while creating ambiance. From the tried and true table lamp to the chandelier that’s the main focal point, lighting is a versatile accessory that is easy to switch out. Shop our lighting collection

Paul Michael Company has it all - chandeliers, desk lamps, pendents and table lamps.

We love mirrors – not just for vanity reasons – but also for the reflection of light and other decorative accessories. Mirrors make a room feel bigger by creating a sense of openness. From big to small and decorative to simple, we have lots of mirrors on the wall. Shop our mirrors

On a mantle or a wall, multiple big mirrors create a big impact.

While these are the hardest working accessories in the house, Paul Michael Company makes it easy to transform a room by offering an incredible selection of affordable lighting and mirrors.

Sofa Styling Tips

It happens to the best of us…sometimes you just get stuck in a design rut. You feel like you’ve made an investment and that you need to stick with it. Well if you start out by buying some neutral basics it’s fairly easy and inexpensive to give it an update! You can completely transform a room by changing out the accessories. Take a look at how we styled the same sofa three different ways.

1. Monochromatic

Paul Michael Company + Updated Traditional + Grey +Modern

Use the same color in different shades to create a harmonious palette. Jazz it up by mixing patterns and textures. When mixing patterns remember that scale is your friend. If you select patterns with different scales then you won’t have to worry about them trying to compete…no one wants a pillow fight, or do they?

2. Personality Plus

Paul Michael Company + Gypsetter + Global +Tribal

If you are into a more eclectic approach to design, incorporate items you picked up on trips or inherited from family. If you hate your grandmother’s table and can rarely find the time to travel, no worries we’ve got you covered! You can get the “collected” look you desire by shopping at our stores or online at http://www.paulmichael.company.com

3. Pop of Color

Paul Micael Company + Cozy Colonial

This nearly neutral arrangement has a lot of spunk and just a little bit of color. We love mixing the warm red hues with a cool blue. It’s a nice contrast with an Americana flair. Notice how the white gourd lamps and plates give this mostly rustic look a refined feel.

At the Paul Michael Company we have a variety of items that will separate your home from your neighbor’s. We know that this is your most personal space and we want to help you create a home that is comfortable and stylish…just like you!

Outdoor Living at its Best

Around here, fall seems to be everyone’s favorite time of year. The cooler temperatures and colorful leaves invite us back outside to enjoy new scenery and flavors. We prefer to sit on the patio in these hand crafted Adirondack chairs while sipping on a seasonal red wine.

Made in Napa, these Adirondack-style chairs are repurposed from old oak wine casks.

On one of their adventures to California, Debbie and Paul stumbled upon similar Adirondack chairs. They loved the detail of the wood and knew there was something different about it, so they tracked down the artisan who makes them in Napa. Turns out, these chairs (and tables, too) are handcrafted from old oak wine casks. Maybe that’s what makes this the perfect chair for wine drinking.

Whether you’re sitting by the fire, entertaining under the harvest moon or enjoying the crisp autumn air, Paul Michael Company has outdoor furniture and accessories that can fit your needs. Stop by our stores and shop online to savor the season in style.

Putting Clutter in its Place

It happens…we all accumulate stuff. The best way to keep stuff from turning into clutter is to develop an organizational system. This means designating a home for things that are used daily like keys, sunglasses, papers and magazines, and other household knick-knacks.

At Paul Michael Home, we are collectors, so our stuff is more like treasures that tell a story. That’s why we have plenty of decorative pieces that put our stuff on display while taming clutter. For organizing, these are our picks that are available now.

Shelves neatly display curios and tchotchkes. Add some wood or fabric boxes for stashing the not-so-pretty things.

ROCKstar New Arrivals

PMC Geodes

In April of this year, Paul Michael returned triumphant from an Arizona picking trip with a truckload of ancient geodes and fossils – and, not one of his employees were particularly surprised. Over the years, Paul acquired a number of curious objects: a three hundred year old, 32-ft boat from southern India, swans made from cypress stumps hand-carved in West Monroe, pencil-thin beeswax prayer candles made by and purchased from a Catholic priest in Sitka, Alaska. See, Paul Michael hasn’t grown his stores by doing the expected. He strives every day to do the exact opposite. “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it,” Paul quips.

Paul’s true passion lies in creating, and to create he needs cool stuff and a cool space. #1 – Check! To understand how this painter’s palate sizes up, imagine just one of his four warehouses in Southeast Arkansas filled to the brim with his collection of antiques, oddities, and architectural salvage.

PMC Architectural Salvage

PMC Antique Signs

#2 – Double Check! Not only has Paul been developing a creative working environment for his skilled furniture makers and craftsmen to work, but every employee, from the home office payroll clerks to the Monroe store managers, work towards proliferating the Paul Michael ideals, quality, and lifestyle. From his exclusive line of hand-made furniture & accessories made from locally harvested and architectural salvaged lumber to the well-known Creation Station, the Paul Michael Company, intrigues employees and the public alike.

PMC Gigantic Amethyst

You may be thinking, “Why does a Home Decor and Furniture store want geodes and fossils”. No, we are not expanding into a museum… We truly believe that nature makes the best art, and there is no better testament than fossils and geodes. We are selling them “raw” and letting you get creative with their use. Statue them on an entree way console for an instant conversation piece, or position them in your family room bookcase like a badge of flair. Whatever you decide, know that these objects from the caves of Hot Springs, Arkansas, the mountains of Morocco, and extreme southern Brazil are unique and genuine… Quality. The only thing Paul knows.

Be on the lookout for Paul’s incredible selection of crystals, geodes, petrified wood, and fantastic fossils- arriving at a store near you this fall!
