A PMC Fall Porch: Make the most of your space

Fall_porch

Cooler nights are finally becoming a regular occurrence here down south, and that means enjoying the fall evenings outside with good company, tasty food, and eye-catching, fall decor.

Pumpkins have been a staple in fall arrangement for centuries and it’s safe to say that isn’t changing any time soon.  Mixing pumpkins with different textures and colors creates some colorful eye-candy and keeps things interesting during the pumpkin filled season.

While pumpkins are the go-to fall decor item, incorporating other natural tones to your arrangement will double the impact and keep your eyes entertained no matter what angle!  Make an impression no matter the size of your space with some inspiration from our Paul Michael Company fall porch.

Mirror, Mirror On the Wall

Bedrooms are often the most private rooms in the house, making them the most personal.  One’s personal style is  usually best reflected in the bedroom, so adding bedding and headboards to our product offerings for the Spring 2015 season gave our designers the opportunity to fully dive into experimenting with bedroom looks for the first time in our stores.

For our first bedroom photoshoot we really wanted to go for something unexpected.  Using some fairy tale inspiration, our designers created a sophisticated and striking sleep space.

Turning a House into a Home

MakeoverThis spring season (now getting into the beginning of summer) we have had the opportunity to stage a handful of empty houses as well as give some lived-in residences a PMC home makeover.  Staging an empty house comes with no design restraints, so the process is fairly painless.  The challenges arise when decorating or redecorating a home.  People often feel they must stay within one style element in order to create an attractive interior.  Paul Michael Company designer, Jenny, believes people often limit themselves when thinking they must stay within the confines of certain design.  “It happens all the time.  People think they can’t buy new pieces they are in love with because it won’t mix with their existing decor,” Jenny says, “But it is so easy to integrate new pieces with existing decor seamlessly.”

Here at Paul Michael Company, we believe turning a house into a home entails knowing what style you like, but also keeping an open mind when it comes to integrating new pieces into your existing design; giving a house personality is when it really becomes a home.

Recently our Monroe store manager, Debra, moved into a new house and immediately requested Jenny’s assistance when making this space her own.  Debra gave Jenny free reign when it came to putting this look together, other than telling her she gravitates toward “shabby chic” designs.  Integrating new pieces with Debra’s existing decor and adding a bit of flare, Jenny and Monroe employee, Ashley, transformed an empty house into the home Debra hoped for.

A PMC Home Makeover

MakeoverTwo weekends ago Monroe designer, Jenny, and I had the pleasure of completely redecorating a Michael family member’s home.  Working with a blank canvas can be a little overwhelming when it comes to furnishing and decorating multiple rooms, but it leaves for complete creative freedom.  We were given the task of filling a living room and dining room with furniture and accessories in two days.  We took a shopping trip through the Paul Michael Company Lake Village location and got to work.

We used Paul Michael Company accessories as well as a few the homeowners had hiding in a closet.  The man of the house was pleased to find his deer heads made the final cut.

After the Makeover

We made a lounge area next to the dining table for the lady of the house.  She expressed to us she enjoys doing Sudoku puzzles while drinking her coffee in the mornings, so we gave her a cozy and decorative area for her morning activities.

Almost all of the pieces on her gallery wall are posters and knick knacks she’s collected over the years, but we centered them all around the Moon Glow painting available at Paul Michael Company store locations.  It’s painted on the back of an old window!

A Much Needed Grown-Up Update

update

I’ve lived in three different houses and have probably upgraded my decor only three times in my 24 years.  I’ve had the same color room since I was in 7th grade and to this day I still use some of the same decorative accessories I used back then.  Coming to work for the Paul Michael Company, I took advantage of the vast array of decor at my finger tips.  My kitchen, living room, dining room, and hallways were quickly transformed into a cozy yet sophisticated environment.  However, in my year and a half of employment with Paul Michael Company, I never touched my bedroom.  My walls were adorned with paintings I did in middle school and paintings done by my nephew when he was about seven; my idea of a gallery wall.  My hutch was home to all of my jewelry boxes, random pig tchotchkes, and my cheerleading pictures from middle and high school.  After my husband built a new bed so we could retire the bed I used in college, I decided it was time to perform a much needed grown-up update, for both of our sakes.  Here are the results:

Our Bed Before

Our Bed Before

Try not to judge my lack of bed making, I didn’t know this photo would be used for a blog post at the time.

My "gallery wall"

My “Gallery Wall”

Yes, you’re seeing Ren and Stimpy, Ralph Wiggum, and an Andy Warhol replica.  I’m very happy I’ve kept these around over the years, but it was time to send them from the bedroom to the guest room.

Bed upgraded

Bed Upgraded

This corner of our bedroom feels much cleaner now.  To offset my colorful tapestry, my husband chose the Paul Michael Company Resin Elk Head to hang above us at night.  Yes, I love the way it looks.  Yes, it is a little scary to sleep under.

Click for Pewter Bedding (for some reason this bedding photographs blue, but it is a grey tone in-person), Decorative Pillows, and Sheepskin Rug.

The Petrified Wood Stump and Resin Elk Head can be found in-stores.

Yes, scary.

Only a little scary

Now for the hutch.

Hutch Before

Hutch Before

These small keepsakes worked fine in my college years, but should have been retired as soon as my husband and I moved in together.  This update was a little delayed but the results are worth it.

Hutch Upgraded

Hutch Upgraded

The room feels entirely different now and it works for both my husband and me.  This look wasn’t at all hard to achieve.  I replaced my old jewelry boxes with matching bone inlay boxes, I found frames for the photos I just had propped up, I chose a shallow petrified wood bowl to hold the jewelry I swap out daily, and randomly selected accessories I liked (I realized later most of them were animals) to fill the rest of the space.

Click for Rhino Bookends, Mirrored Star, Hippo Figurine, Orange Frame, Small Bone Inlay Box, Medium Bone Inlay Box, Bone Inlay Frame, and White Hour Glass.

The Vintage Crate, Glass Float with Rope, Ceramic Hand and Petrified Wood Bowl can be found in-stores.

Sometimes simple things like changing pillow patterns can make a huge difference and sometimes grabbing the bull by the horns for a whole room redo is exactly what you needed.  And sometimes exchanging your piggy banks for bookends is entirely necessary.

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Jake Michael

introducing

Exactly ten days ago we had the pleasure of gathering to witness Jake Michael, and his fiancée, Leigh Thompson, tie the knot at St. Mary’s Catholic Church here in Lake Village, Arkansas.  The ceremony was beyond everything you would expect it to be.  The bride was a stunning vision in white with an anxious smile draped across her face, the guests whispered to their friends how exquisite the dress was as soon as the future Mrs. Jake Michael walked in the door, bridesmaids and groomsmen squirmed excitedly through the ceremony as their close friends committed themselves to one another, and the groom looked taken aback at the gorgeous girl standing across from him.

Shortly after the “You may kiss the bride!” part, we headed down Main Street to Paul’s office to celebrate the newlyweds.  Normally, Paul’s office serves as the accounting office, board room, bread baking kitchen, Dove Hunt party venue, and warehouse for Ecommerce.  In just a week’s time, it was transformed into a reception hall for the new Mr. and Mrs. Jake Michael.  Using Paul Michael Company merchandise, Ron Pepper worked his magic to create the “woodsy wonderland” the bride envisioned for the event.  He certainly did not disappoint!

Meet the PMC Pets

pets_bannerAs most of you know (or so we hope) our stores are pet friendly locations no matter what size or breed.  While this comes as a shock to some people, pets in the work place are nothing out of the ordinary for the Paul Michael Company crew.  Since the company’s establishment, we have always had a pet friendly atmosphere and have even welcomed a cat or two as live in furry friends in our stores.  Since it’s Monday and cute fur babies put a smile on everyone’s face, we wouldd like to introduce the pets of Paul Michael Company!

PMC Throwback Thursday

Cleaning out and organizing our offices led us to discover a treasure trove of old photographs buried under piles of paper work.  We’ve shuffled through them at least once a week since their discovery, giving us windows of insight into the early days of Paul Michael Company.  We also learned just how many of our current employees have been here since the beginning, stayed loyal, and have grown with the company.

These gems are too good not to share, so here’s our first ever, and certainly not last, Throwback Thursday blog post.

Hats, Horses, and Mint Juleps

Tomorrow marks the 140th renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports:  the Kentucky Derby held at Churchill Downs.  Even though the races are what it’s all about, the mint juleps and hat fashions are usually what get the most attention.

Part Southern tradition, part spectacle, the Kentucky Derby hat parade makes for a much anticipated fashion show.  Like celebrities during awards season, viewers anxiously await to see attendees’ hat fashions at the derby.

We had the pleasure of working with Marie Michael (Paul’s aunt) and her friend, Liz Rice, at our Lafayette Creation Station to spice up their derby hats and have a wreath made.

Kentucky_derby

I will be attending my first derby party Saturday so of course I wanted the most outlandish, bizarre hat I could think up!  Luckily, I have talented friends at our Lake Village Creation Station that helped me turn my vision into this bad boy:

Now for the cocktails!  The mint julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century.  So it’s only appropriate to drink these classy beverages at your own Derby Day party.

You’ll need:

  • 5 fresh mint leaves, plus a few mint sprigs for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Shaved ice
  • 2 1/2 ounces bourbon whiskey

Here’s how:

Place mint leaves, sugar and a splash of water into a silver julep cup or a 12-ounce glass. Muddle the mint, sugar, and water together with the tip of the handle of a wooden spoon. Fill the glass with shaved ice, add the bourbon, and stir until combined. Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh mint and enjoy!

Even if you’re not a derby fan, joining in on the occasion is sure to be a good time.  What’s not to enjoy when there’s silly hats and delicious beverages involved?
