Fleas and Tips from Paul and Debbie Michael

Blog Title Guide

With over 35 years of shopping, buying and selling at flea markets all over the country, Paul and Debbie Michael are happy to share a few good tips on how to find the best stuff.  All flea markets have a really small community of antique dealers and vendors who travel the country and show up together to attend the circuit of shows that usually occur from Spring all the way through Fall.  It is easy to look online to find a flea market near you!

Step 1 – Get there early; beat the crowds.  If the event starts on a Friday and it is a larger size show, it is a good idea to arrive a day or two early.  Lots of trading among dealers take place as they unload their trucks and trailers.  The early bird catches the worm.

GET THERE EARLY

Step 2 – If there is a site map available, it is a great idea to get one.  Familiarize yourself with the grounds, and ask where the best dealers usually set up. Be specific about what you are hunting for.  Whether it be antique buttons, military items, vintage clothing, crafts, etc., keep your eye on the prize.   The dealers generally set up in the same spots which ends up being like a community or little neighborhood.  If you are really in it for the hunt, and are just looking for whatever catches your eye, find the areas where dealers set up that do not come on a regular basis.  Some markets refer to this as the unreserved area.  Their tables will be filled with anything and everything. This is the spot where you just might find your hidden gem.

GET A MAP

Step 3 –  It is always a good idea to have a specific item in mind when you begin your hunt.  Do a little research if you are on the hunt for specific items so you will have a good idea of the current market price.  Paul says, “the most important ingredient of buying an item, is deciding in your mind what you are willing to pay, and what the true market value is.”  Keep in mind that the price the dealer is asking will be at market value or a little above.  Half the fun of attending the flea market to find your treasure is not only the hunt but also the negotiation.  Dealers appreciate the art of a negotiation!  Be prepared, and do NOT Google an item in the presence of a dealer.  There are definite rules of etiquette to follow when making a deal, and this is a big insult to a dealer.  They tend to be a little cranky anyway, and this could ruin your chances of buying your merchandise at a lower price.  Once you have spotted the item of interest, you need to decide in your mind what you are willing to pay for it.  Feel free to check it out as much as you like and ask as many questions as you have.  You will find that most of the dealers are honest, knowledgeable, and enjoy sharing any and all the information they have.

Paul Michael Company at the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market

Hi, Elizabeth Michael here!

Once a year, as a company, we all pull together and do something so utterly insane, it surprises us every time. You ask, “Why would you continue to do something so crazy?” The answer is you! Every year we set up a temporary store in Houston, TX at the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market. And, every year we are so blown away by our customers in Houston, we come back.

Our team prepares all year long to pull off the amazing feat of opening up a 40,000 sq ft booth at the Reliant Center in Houston in only 5 days.  We buy special merchandise almost a year in advance, and pour through spreadsheets and floor plans to make sure everything will fit and be merchandised in just the right way. We ship down twenty-five 18-wheelers, over 100 employees, and spend only 5 days setting up and two days breaking the booth down. Our 40,000 sq ft booth is bigger than all but one of our stores (Monroe, LA weighs in at 49,000 sq ft).

PaulMichaelCompany_Working

On Wednesday night, there is a preview party, where guests can shop, dine, and drink before the show officially opens.  We all get dressed up and have fun with the customers. Every year this group of ladies finds Paul and takes a photo. This was 2012’s picture. Paul was really into it!PaulMichaelCompany_SayCheese

On Thursday, the crowd comes.  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday bring different shoppers every day. Houstonites know how to shop and decorate! Most of the time, they forget to leave room in the car for their friends.PaulMichaelCompany_LoadedDown

Or, they need dock passes to pick up their loot because they can’t physically carry it out.PaulMichaelCompany_SoManyBagsEvery year we bring over 12 different Christmas looks, solid wood furniture, dinnerware, lamps, wall art, candles, gifts, and our exclusive line of furniture, home decor, and cutting boards made out of locally harvested wood in our wood shop in Dermott, AR, USA. Some pieces are even made out of reclaimed and repurposed antiques or architectural salvage.

Even the news came to report last year!PaulMichaelCompany_CameraEquipNutcracker Market is a holiday wonderland. Our employees always love taking a quick break to go shop around.  Here’s assistant Store Manager, Kate Roane, Debbie Michael, visual merchandiser, Ashley Mayo, and I taking a quick break and photo-op to record our colored jeans collection.PaulMichaelCompany_ColoredDenim

I wonder what year we will look back on this picture and think, “Remember that colored jeans fad?”

When we do get a moment to go shop, our favorite booths are China Baroque, a jewelry company that uses broken antique china as jewels, Pajama Party, insanely cute, comfortable and inexpensive pajama sets, Donne di Domani,  the ever-popular Italian marinara sauce, and Great Lakes Tea & Spice, selling their loose- leaf teas, spices, and tea paraphernalia.

We have been talking about doing this for a while, but this is the year, 2013…. Drum roll… We will be doing a time lapse of the set up and will be posting it after the show. Stay tuned.

To all of our Houston fans out there, don’t forget to come to the Nutcracker Market  November 7th – 10th.

ROCKstar New Arrivals

PMC Geodes

In April of this year, Paul Michael returned triumphant from an Arizona picking trip with a truckload of ancient geodes and fossils – and, not one of his employees were particularly surprised. Over the years, Paul acquired a number of curious objects: a three hundred year old, 32-ft boat from southern India, swans made from cypress stumps hand-carved in West Monroe, pencil-thin beeswax prayer candles made by and purchased from a Catholic priest in Sitka, Alaska. See, Paul Michael hasn’t grown his stores by doing the expected. He strives every day to do the exact opposite. “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it,” Paul quips.

Paul’s true passion lies in creating, and to create he needs cool stuff and a cool space. #1 – Check! To understand how this painter’s palate sizes up, imagine just one of his four warehouses in Southeast Arkansas filled to the brim with his collection of antiques, oddities, and architectural salvage.

#2 – Double Check! Not only has Paul been developing a creative working environment for his skilled furniture makers and craftsmen to work, but every employee, from the home office payroll clerks to the Monroe store managers, work towards proliferating the Paul Michael ideals, quality, and lifestyle. From his exclusive line of hand-made furniture & accessories made from locally harvested and architectural salvaged lumber to the well-known Creation Station, the Paul Michael Company, intrigues employees and the public alike.

PMC Gigantic Amethyst

You may be thinking, “Why does a Home Decor and Furniture store want geodes and fossils”. No, we are not expanding into a museum… We truly believe that nature makes the best art, and there is no better testament than fossils and geodes. We are selling them “raw” and letting you get creative with their use. Statue them on an entree way console for an instant conversation piece, or position them in your family room bookcase like a badge of flair. Whatever you decide, know that these objects from the caves of Hot Springs, Arkansas, the mountains of Morocco, and extreme southern Brazil are unique and genuine… Quality. The only thing Paul knows.

Be on the lookout for Paul’s incredible selection of crystals, geodes, petrified wood, and fantastic fossils- arriving at a store near you this fall!

The Art of Decorating Your Home with Scented Candles

Scent influences our mood and perception, which is why many people choose scented detergents and wear perfume. Scents also affect how people perceive particular environments. For this reason, scented candles play an important role in making a home feel attractive and welcoming.

Room by Room You don’t have to use the same scent everywhere. For the bedroom, you might want subtle, soothing scents such as sandalwood, myrrh or a soft floral. In the dining room, invigorating and deliciously scented candles, such as citrus or vanilla, work well.

Seasonal Scents Scented candles are a great way to transition the home to a new season. In spring and summer, for example, floral scents or anything reminiscent of a beach or open field brings the season to the space. In fall and winter, cinnamon, baked apple, clove or pumpkin spice candles bring a sense of coziness and warmth.

If the scent of cleaning products lingers in the room, air it out before using candles. Otherwise, the scents will compete unpleasantly.
