Green Furnishings and Home Decor

Earth Day is April 22, and the environmentally friendly holiday has us thinking about going green with furnishings and home décor. More and more, people are becoming aware of how important it is to make green practices and products a part of our everyday lives.

The importance of recycling was one of the things that prompted Paul Michael Company to start designing and manufacturing a line of furniture and accessories in Arkansas. As we explain in our history:

Today we refer to these original designs as Paul’s World ~reclaim, reuse, recycle, redecorate~ everything is 100% American made and the majority of items are constructed of architectural salvage and reclaimed wood that Paul has been collecting for years.

One of our exclusive pieces, for example, is this storage furniture made from reclaimed native wood and found, antique galvanized mechanist buckets.

From Tree to Furnishings: Manufacturing in the U.S.

We recently acquired a giant tree trunk, and we know we’ll be turning the wood into something fun for Paul’s World. Just look at the potential here!

We’re not only looking forward to transforming this tree, but also love the idea of repurposing old wood and manufacturing here in the U.S. Going local is a concept we’ve been championing at Paul Michael Company for a while, and now many believe there will be a return of manufacturing to the U.S.—and soon.

In fact, a recent article in the Harvard Business Review discusses an upcoming U.S. “manufacturing renaissance,” including the furniture industry as one of the main categories this could affect.

You may also recall that one of 2012’s big decorating trends is that people want more furnishings made here in the U.S.—and that’s exactly what we’re doing with Paul’s World.

Are you interested in locally made furniture and accessories for your home? We think it gives the goods a special touch!

Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market Starts Tomorrow!

We just wanted to give everyone a quick reminder that the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market begins tomorrow, Nov. 10, and lasts through Sunday, Nov. 13—and Paul Michael Company is a market merchant!

Paul’s World furniture and accessories have hit the road for the very first time, and they’re going to be unveiled at the event. Believe it or not, we loaded up 25 18-wheel trucks to haul goods to the market.

We began the huge production of setting up the 40,000 square-foot booth last Thursday at the Reliant Center in Houston, and we think you’re going to love it!

Can’t wait to see everything? Visit our Facebook page for a sneak peek! On our Facebook wall we’ve already posted a picture of a new product we’ll be unveiling and a video about the antique European grain sacks we’ll have in our Nutcracker booth, so be sure to check it out!

The market hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. We can’t wait to see you there!

Engraving: Imagine the Possibilities!

Paul’s World is getting turned upside down. After attending some major industrial auctions trying to buy critical pieces of machinery for furniture making, the factory is buzzing, literally, with new fancy machinery.

The biggest entertainment right now is our new laser engraver. It can engrave anything on almost any surface. We even took a picture of our head foreman, Sal, and engraved his image in a piece of wood. It looked just like him! (In fact, it’s almost freaky what this machine can do.)

We are currently putting our logo on our cutting boards—it takes 2 minutes and 17 seconds for each one. Here’s a look during the middle of the process:

And a video of the process!

Now, our imaginations are going wild! We have some old slate roofing salvaged during the aftermath of Katrina that we engraved with an awesome fleur di lis. Just think of all the possibilities…. monograms, cool phrases that you could hang on the wall, vintage signs—the list goes on and on.

This laser printer will be a great addition to Paul’s World. What would you love to have engraved?

Go Nuts at the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market!

We’re Houston-bound! The 31st annual Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market will take place from Nov. 10 through Nov. 13 at the Reliant Center, and Paul Michael Company will be one of the market merchants.

We’ve been hard at work packing up the merchandise for the market, and this year we’re bringing a lot of our custom furniture that was made right in our Arkansas warehouse. In fact, look for Paul’s World inside the booth because Paul Michael designed and manufactured many of these exclusive furnishings himself. Insider’s tip: Come early for the best selection since we do sell out of items!

We love our Houstonian customers and the Nutcracker, so we hope to see you at this huge shopping extravaganza! The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Visit for more information, and don’t forget to bring your tape measurer when you come!

Innovative Cutting Board Easily Becomes a Party Platter

Paul Michael loves to cook and entertain, so many of the Paul’s World products we manufacture relate back to solving dilemnas faced by chefs and hosts everywhere.

In fact, Paul designed a cutting board as a solution to a big problem he always faced when grilling for a big crowd. When wondering, “Why don’t they make a platter with handles that you can use to take the meat off the grill, carry it to the table, cut on and serve on?” he decided to take action and create one. Done. He came up with a cutting board-platter combination using cypress single plank boards and cast iron handles. These practical boards also have a trough around them so the juices don’t run off.

Naturally, Paul uses the products he thinks up. Here’s one such cutting board at Paul’s recent dove hunting party, where we entertained 70 happy guests.
