Below are a few ideas on getting started with some recycled objects to decorate your home. Let your imagination and whimsy soar!

  • Mini cloches – Turn stemware upside down to enclose small items
  • Paint swatch organizers – Put two swatches back-to-back and stitch together the sides and bottom.
  • Wallpaper tree – Fashion a tree out of old wallpaper and affix to a wall
  • Mason jar lotion dispenser – Convert a Mason jar into a lotion dispenser for a vintage look
  • Fork and spoon door handles – Make door pulls from a fork and spoon from the same set

Home decorating ideas are only limited by your fancy and imagination. Use some common household objects for home decoration to give your home an individual look.

Decorative Sugar Eggs

Holidays are always special at Aunt Izzy’s house. Every year, 40+ family members gather at the matriarch of our family’s home. As a family filled with culinary talents, each holiday centers around a festive feast with all the fixins!  One of our favorites during Easter is the inedible centerpiece of the table: decorative sugar eggs, hollowed out and showing an Easter vignette. Like this:

At 92, you can imagine Aunt Izzy’s dismay to see the eggs deteriorate. After so many Easters they eventually broke apart. So, our family pulled together to make a new set of eggs. Here’s how to start your own sugar egg collection. Making sugar eggs is easy and fun for the whole family.

Here is what you will need:

Egg molds.

Cake decorating kit.

Sugar.

Water.

Royal Icing.

Food Coloring.

Stand mixer with whisk for Royal Icing.

We followed the recipe in this book, circa 1969. For the more tech-savvy readers, we found an online tutorial by theKitchn. The recipes differ slightly.

Aunt Izzy and I did not have any tiny Easter figurines to make dioramas, so we hollowed out the eggs and “glued” them together with the royal icing.

Here are our eggs mid production.  Due to the rain, they took two days to dry.

And, now, our favorite Easter tradition will be surrounded by the tradition and love of our family once again.

Welcome family and friends with a colorful sign like this butterfly or blooming flower.

Hang up a colorful wreath bursting with spring blossoms.

You can even make a custom Easter and spring wreath for your home with colorful ribbon and mesh!

You could also hang these cute butterflies in front of a window for spring and Easter cheer.

How to Make Our Carrot Mesh Design

When we posted a picture of this carrot mesh design by Paul Michael Company’s creative designers on our Facebook page, it was met with an overwhelmingly positive response—more than 230 people liked it!

Many even asked about how to make one. If you love to DIY decor, we’ve not only posted instructions on our Facebook page for the carrot mesh design, but also made a how-to video to help—and of course we wanted our blog readers to be able to see it, too!

The instructions in the video take you through the steps of making a carrot like this one with two different options: Option A, using 4-inch-by-25-yards of green mesh ribbon, or Option B, using 21-inch-by-10-yards of green mesh ribbon.

You can make a carrot like this using a half cone form with green and orange mesh, or we can make one for you!

Easter Decorating: Bunnies Galore

Easter is only a few weeks away, so we wanted to offer more great decorating inspiration for the holiday. While we’ve already shared an overview of some of our Easter décor, in today’s post we want to focus specifically on rabbits. Check out these Easter bunnies from Paul Michael Company for ideas:

Welcome guests to your home with this adorable Welcome sign.

These two bunnies would look great perched on a shelf or mantel.

You can place these colorful bunnies in a pot of spring flowers.

And this bunny is perfect for a more nature-inspired Easter look.
