Mirror, Mirror On the Wall

Bedrooms are often the most private rooms in the house, making them the most personal.  One’s personal style is  usually best reflected in the bedroom, so adding bedding and headboards to our product offerings for the Spring 2015 season gave our designers the opportunity to fully dive into experimenting with bedroom looks for the first time in our stores.

For our first bedroom photoshoot we really wanted to go for something unexpected.  Using some fairy tale inspiration, our designers created a sophisticated and striking sleep space.

Setting the perfect dinner table involves more than just laying out the proper utensils. A good host will also consider the aesthetic details of the process as well. Here are some great tips for setting an inviting and beautiful dinner table.

Add Color: Placemats and chargers are an excellent way to add color and excitement to your dinner table.

A Little Fragrance: Flowered centerpieces are both eye- and nose-catching but take care not to make them too high or too aromatic.

Use Multiple China Sets: Contrasting dinnerware is an easy way to add complexity to the décor of your dinner table. The look should result in an eclectic feel that is definitely going to be a great icebreaker at the start of your dinner party.

Place the Silverware Properly: Forks on the left, knives and spoons on the right. Also, be aware of which glasses to use for water, red and white wines.

Color Your Garden with Decorative Planters

Now that spring has returned, it is officially gardening season and Paul Michael Company is currently bursting with a variety of ceramic pottery that is perfect for container gardening.  Container gardens are a wonderful way to add some color to your front porch or your patio, but they can also create beautiful variety in your garden or landscape.

Celebrity gardener and lifestyle guru, P. Allen Smith, offers some excellent advice on his blog to help you create a successful container garden.  Here are some of his tips:

  • Make sure you choose the right size container for the plant you intend to place in it.  You also need to ensure that the container has a drainage hole.
  • Get soil that is meant for use in containers, and if you can match the type of soil to the type of plant that’s all the better.
  • When watering your plants, water the plant at the bottom of the pot to reach the roots more quickly.

Choosing the right plants for your container is important for a successful container garden, but you should also consider the design of the container itself.  Don’t settle for cheap plastic containers or boring terra cotta either; you can make a statement with the containers you choose, and high-quality pottery will last you a lifetime.  Stop by any of Paul Michael Company’s locations to see containers that can add personality to your porch or garden.

Brighten Your Home with a Touch of Spring-Like Decor

Spring time is the perfect excuse to refresh your home decor and make your house feel like new inside, especially after a long winter of being cooped up indoors.  Although you may want to focus on a single bedroom, there are marvelous ways to add a spring-like touch throughout your entire home!

What you’ll need are uplifting new colors and decor that’ll add a fresh touch. Here are a few tips on incorporating spring hues into your home this season:

  • Traditional spring colors translate well to many rooms, and they work especially well in spaces that get lots of natural sunlight.
  • Pair a pretty pastel with a solid color to keep rooms from looking like it was taken over by the Easter bunny. A soft blue along with a neutral is a great example of how to tone down a spring color in the home.
  • Don’t forget the spring green! This season is all about getting back outside and enjoying nature, and we all know that green is the most natural color there is. Be sure to infuse it throughout your home for an organic touch.
  • If bright spring colors are not your style, you can still add spring cheer with more muted tones like cream or beige instead of outright yellow.

Of course, we’ve got plenty of spring inspired decor items right here for you at Paul Michael Co.! What do you think about these?

Let’s take a deeper look at what’s known as Southwestern design style. Here’s a few features that it often includes:

  • Vibrant colors that produce old Western look and feel… deep Earth tones are very predominant
  • A healthy blend of both old and new elements

Bring Spring Home with Pretty Pastels

pastel furniture

Welcome spring with pastel furniture!

The hot new colors showing up in current home decorating ideas are not really hot at all. They are pastels that remind us of candy and ice cream. In the right color combinations, these soft pretty colors become sophisticated palettes.

Paint

When used on ceilings and walls, pale blue, mint green and creamy yellow offer a soft backdrop for furniture and accessories. Mix them with stronger hues of purple, navy, brown or black to create depth and sophistication.

Fabrics and Rugs

Find a wonderful pastel print, and build the rest of the room around it. Large patterns are great for rugs or large upholstered pieces. Let them stand out as the room’s focal point, and use solid colors or small prints to finish out the room.

Art and Accessories

A painting in pastel hues provides a great way to introduce smaller touches of color into the room. Choose one color in the painting and use it on a lamp, vase or throw pillows. Introduce pastel hues through books, glassware or fresh flowers. Keep a lot of white or ivory in the room for neutrality.

Find a Unique Focal Point to Guide Your Room Design

interior design tips

Image via Pinterest

One of the easiest principles for homes decorating ideas is to utilize a focal point. A focal point can be any number of different items from artwork to fountains. Because this method is used so often, it is important that you find something truly unique to set your decor apart from the rest.

Here are a few ideas for choosing a focal point in your room designs:

  1. Create an imaginative fantasy wonderland with the help of a bookcase. Place one large aquarium in the center surrounded by coral and shells. A smaller bookcase can easily fit a few smaller well lit aquariums spaced throughout the space, then highlighted with photos, sand, shells, whatever you have to fit the theme.
  2. If you have an interesting collection, display it to your advantage. This is especially good if you have a variety of sizes to catch the interest of the viewer.
  3. Create an amazing collage of pictures you have of your family, friends, or activities.
  4. Find a truly unique piece, like a carousel horse or a hand-decorated piece of reclaimed furniture, and use that as a beautifully bohemian focal point.

The point is to make it personal and not limit yourself to commonplace items. Find more interesting ideas for your decor at any of Paul Michael Company’s four locations, and be sure to check out our Facebook page!

Change the Whole Look of a Room with Throw Pillows

interior design decor

Image via Pinterest

If you are looking at your current home decor thinking it is time to update it or that it needs a little more vavoom, you should grab a few throw pillows to give your space a new look. Pillows are a great addition for the bedroom, study, family, or living room. These simple additions can breath life into a room with a little color, or add the subtle touch necessary to bring the room design together.

Throw pillows come in a huge variety of sizes, shapes, colors, patterns and textures, making them your best friend when decorating.  They are also easy to mix-and-match or switch entirely when you want to give your whole room a new look without the investment of a complete redesign.

The addition of throw pillows can assist in bringing your color palette together. If the colors of your furniture, curtains, and accessories are mismatched, the confused color palette can make room feel broken up or even disorganized. By strategically placing a few throw pillows on the furniture with colors mirrored in the other parts of the space, the room will instantly transform into a cohesive design.  If the colors of your room are a little bland, throw pillows can also add that energizing pop of color more quickly and cost-effectively than repainting or redesigning the space.
