Wet Your Whistle

WET_WHISTLE

The winter season has us longing for feelings of warmth while transitioning into the new year, but the absence of a tree in the corner and stockings hanging from the mantle can leave the house feeling bare.  To overcome that feeling of an empty home combined with the spirit of winter hot toddies, we put together this “Wet Your Whistle” look for our latest photoshoot.  Our goal was to create a warm yet sophisticated look one might find at a cigar bar in Brooklyn.

Infusing Southwestern Design Style into Your Home

When it comes to designing and decorating at home, there’s always so much talk about modern, contemporary, traditional and the like. But what if none of those design styles tickles your fancy? What if you’re looking for something a bit more… rugged?

Let’s take a deeper look at what’s known as Southwestern design style. Here’s a few features that it often includes:

  • Vibrant colors that produce old Western look and feel… deep Earth tones are very predominant
  • A healthy blend of both old and new elements
  • An overall sense of a particular time and place… there’s no mistaking when you’re in the midst of a room decked out with Southwestern style
  • Homage to what’s natural: deserts, mountains, sunsets, parks, animal hides and longhorn skulls
  • A hint of cowboy/cowgirl flair with boots, hats, lassos and the like

Using Emerald In Home Decor

It’s time to trade out those tangerine tango pillow covers for emerald because Pantone named its 2013 color of the year. Emerald is a particularly bright and energetic tone of green, and its connection to the gorgeous gemstone adds a luxurious element to its hue.  It’s a warm, versatile color that can transform a classically conservative design to a fresh and modern look. Here are some suggestions for using emerald in your home décor.

Make a splash

An accent wall is one of the easiest ways to incorporate emerald in home décor. All you need is a can of emerald paint and a roller. Remember that for living room and bedroom walls, matte paint eliminates glare. For bathrooms, high gloss paint is easier to clean and is moisture-resistant.

Cover up

Use emerald-accented pillow covers and throws on your sofa and armchairs. These items come in all price points.

Details

Pull your look together by decorating your rooms with emerald-accented wall art, vases and – the  most ubiquitous emerald item of them all — houseplants. Plants that come in this hue include pothos (devil’s ivy), English ivy, ferms and aglaonema (emerald beauties).

At Paul Michael Company, we’d love to help you find or create unique emerald accents for your home decor.  Stop by one of our store locations or check us out on Facebook for more information!

Industrial Lighting Trend Continues to Shine

Lighting is the easiest and most economical way to update interiors designs. A simple switch or addition of a light fixture can completely change the look and feel of a room. And for the past few years, industrial lighting seems to be lighting up the pages of every design magazine. This trend is showing no signs of burning out anytime soon, too.

Industrial lighting is the perfect way to add a touch of sophisticated edginess to any style interiors. As Houzz design writer Wendy Hyde put it, industrial lighting is “bold enough to make a statement, yet quiet enough for those who just want to get their feet wet in the style.”

Here are some examples of how you can update interiors with industrial lighting.

Hang industrial pendant fixtures above the kitchen island.

Don’t Miss Our St. Patrick’s at Paul’s Event March 15!

Lads and lassies will be gathering at all the Paul Michael Company locations March 15 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for St. Patrick’s at Paul’s, and their friends will be green with envy when they see all the new items.

There will be drawings out of the pot of gold the night of the St. Patty’s party for big discounts, and everyone will get 25% off one item. There will also be food, beverages, how-tos and hourly drawings for gift certificates. Here’s what a few of the different stores are doing for the event:

Monroe, LA
The Monroe store is having Irish-themed food, including a “pot of gold” potato bar with hot and cold toppings, mini Reuben sandwiches, shamrock cookies and mint brownies. You can look forward to door prizes, drawings at the register for a chance at 50% off an item, and a wreath-off contest!

Lafayette, LA
The Lafayette location is doing a Bayou Boogies photo booth. Our logo will be on the film strip, and they’ll bring St. Patrick’s Day props along with a bunch of other fun props. Joey’s will be catering.

Canton, TX
The Canton store is going to have a band, Danny Hollis, who performed for ladies’ night. He’s really good, and his sons also play with him! There will also be St. Patrick’s Day-related food and beverages following the green theme, of course.

Lake Village, AR
Lake Village is having a wreath making contest. 3 people will be selected to construct a spring wreath using the same components and they only have 20 minutes! All will take home their wreath, and one lucky winner will also receive a $50 gift card. Also, Mrs. Debbie will be demonstrating her favorite new product called ‘The Instant Face Lift.’ Watch the wrinkles disappear before your eyes.

Everyone will receive 25% off one item. Draw from Paul’s Pot of Gold for your chance to receive 50% off one item.

We hope you’ll join us for the fun this Thursday, March 15! You can find the addresses of our four stores on our Locations page.

Helpful Solutions for Small Spaces

We have a number of items great for home organization at Paul Michael Company.

Smaller living spaces mean less to clean and maintain, and by following some of the tips listed below, you still have plenty of room for storage.

  • Low bookcases resting along the back of a sofa double as both a display for treasured items as well as a chic sofa table.
  • Choose a sturdy, well made ottoman that can also be used as a coffee table.
  • Window seats, under bed drawers and enclosed cabinets are great for storing linens and other bulky items.
  • No closet space? Buy a wooden ladder, paint to match your décor, and use as a shoe rack. Practical and pretty!
  • Hallways make the perfect storage area. Line with floor-to-ceiling bookcases or other storage furniture for everything from dishes and kitchen items to toiletries.
  • Remember the lighter the better. Get rid of heavy dark drapes, paint rooms in light neutral hues, keep color schemes to monochromatic except for a few splashes of accent colors, and hang mirrors to reflect light and open up the living space.

Like some of the tips listed above? Stop by any of our four convenient Paul Michael Company locations to get started on simplifying your living space.

Georgia Pellegrini Features Paul Michael Co. Furnishings

Georgia Pellegrini, author of Girl Hunter, recently highlighted her trip to Lake Village, AR on her blog, and included details on her time spent at the Paul Michael Company workshop. First, we want to give Georgia a big thank you for featuring us on her blog!

Everyone else, be sure to check out her post on Lake Village. Here’s a small excerpt from what she included of this visit:

“And then I visited Paul Michael’s workshop. I’ve been there before and showed you what he builds and what he works on every day. It’s recycled beautiful things that he repurposes into furniture. I loved this piece especially. It would be lovely in a bathroom full of linens and soaps and trinkets.”

Head over to her blog to see more pictures and information on some of the Paul Michael furnishings she saw.

Picking at First Monday Trade Days in Canton

Picking seems to be a popular topic on television these days, partially fueled by the economic times and the trend to reclaim. Before picking gained its popularity, my mom and dad were drawn to the Old-World style of wheeling and dealing centered around the flea market culture. They actually met in my mom’s antique clothing store in Nashville, Betty Boop’s, over negotiations for a stuffed peacock.

Paul got his start wheeling and dealing in antiques for restaurants at First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX, and since then our business has grown to multiple retail locations, including one right down the road from the First Monday grounds.

As a family, we still love to go to First Monday early and hunt for hidden treasures. You have to be patient, though, because there are miles and miles of vendors to cover. And bring cash because the concept of credit cards or checks doesn’t exist. Our favorite spot on grounds is the “unreserved” section because you never know who will be there or what they will bring. On the grounds, you will also find your fair share of new clothing, decor, pet accessories, sunglasses and so on.

These are all picks from the First Monday grounds…

And here’s a look at the grounds being set up…

Once a month, Canton is a shopping mecca, drawing customers from miles and miles around. I think customers enjoy our store because it is 25,000 square feet of climate-controlled treasures. We layer in old with the new and always keep it visually exciting. Also, we serve complimentary snacks and refreshments all day long and start Happy Hour at 5 p.m. every day during First Monday.

You can find a calendar on the First Monday Canton website.

Happy Picking!
